Spitsbergen: Lonely Island under the Midnight Sun - Budel, (Buedel), Julius and Imber, Walter translated by Ewald Osers
Price : £120.00
Publisher : Berne: Kummerley & Frey Geographical Publishers 1969
Edition : F
Binding : Hard
About 56 pages plus 92 photographic plates on art paper, many in colour, in photographically illustrated colour stiff card binding. This copy was presented in 1976 to Kay Herod and bears the signatures of some 40 members of Cambridge Svalbard Exploration teams between 1949 and 1976. Some are signed directly, others cut from letters and the whole makes a "two-page spread" over the front endpapers, covered with coverlon to preserve the attached pieces of paper or card. Maybe you are in there, maybe I should have done Geology. Something ( a photograph?) has vanished from a brown-paper envelope stuck in at the back of the book.

pp66. Brown cloth binding (colour faded). Gilt lettering to front and spine (also worn so that lettering appears silvern in places). Light bumping about corners and ends of spine. Kegan Paul's account of his religious belief and ultimate acceptance into Roman Catholicism. A previous reader has made one or two pencilled lines beside passages (eg page 17) but not many. Paul makes specific comparisons with others of the time, e.g. Gosse father and son, and Mrs Sherwood, authoress of Orwell's hated Fairchild Family. Unwittingly he also shows how different readers come to different understandings, when he ends with the line "I was blind, now I see", which most readers today will associate with the evangelical writer John Newton, through its use in his hymn "Amazing Grace".

Judging by ghostly "snail trails" this wool migrates from time to time.Does it belong, or is it a hitch-hiker? The book was owned by spinner and weaver Pauline Hinchcliffe, ex "Spinners" folk band Like the artists, I too was born in 1944, and I founded this business in 1974, so can be briefly nostalgic before returning to the present Golden Age!?

Binding : Soft

pp98. Softback (in the style of Left Review), corners and spine ends worn. Fact called itself a sixpenny magazine and the cover caption says "A monograph a month. No. Twenty-three". Most of the magazine is taken up with B L Coombes's I Am A Miner (earlier Fact had published I Drive a Taxi and Mark Benney's The Truth About English Prisons). Short articles on the USA, and comparisons of 1914 and 1939. The book review page contains a publisher's rebuttal of the life of Crichton Porteous. PO has pasted in one photograph of a pit, but absence of blank space has prevented his further graingerisations.
