This is a contemporary binding and book in the usual condition of Dickens firsts. An acceptable copy.

The slim hardback largely identical in binding to the first edition, but with "THIRD EDITION" added at the foot of the front cover. This copy is tight and very good inside, including undamaged hinges, and the pale brown cloth-covered binding, with diagram and lettering in black, is still very acceptable despite a couple of small ink-blotches on the back, a straightened corner bump and some minor rubbing, AND the fact that the spine is parting neatly along the rear joint (partly) and the front joint (completely). I hesitate to send it off for re-backing as this would disturb the almost pristine endpapers and hinges. Also, I have not dared to attack the cloth with Backus cleaner - you never know for sure. (vii)+viii-xvii+(4)+2-109+(3)pp. Includes a foreword to the second edition before the introduction, and a single page of "Works by C.L.Dodgson" on the penultimate page.

If the account is correct then the letter sent from England to the Bay of Bengal cost only 1 old penny in total. How very different from today. Intended as a child's book, this is much, much more.

A very good copy of the Tauchnitz edition in the same year as the Smith Elder British and the Harper American first editions. Two volumes bound in cream vellum with gilt titling and decoration in gilt, red and blue, including gilt decorated blue Morocco label-like panels at head and foot of boards and spine. Covers somewhat darkened and rubbed here and there; a damp-edge mark on one spine - would probably clean up with care, but still charismatic, strong, sound binding with gilt and grey-green printed foliate design on the endpapers. All edges red-dyed.The feature of this "de-luxe" edition is some 50 contemporary photographs each mounted on card, mostly of historic scenes in Florence (Firenze). These are numbered and must be from the stock of a photographer working for the tourist market. A nice item.
