Many line and full colour illustrations of everything from the Mount Pleasant sorting office through a packet ship attacked by pirates to an OAP collecting his pension. If the account is correct then the letter sent from England to the Bay of Bengal cost only 1 old penny in total. How very different from today. Intended as a child's book, this is much, much more.

Covers somewhat darkened and rubbed here and there; a damp-edge mark on one spine - would probably clean up with care, but still charismatic, strong, sound binding with gilt and grey-green printed foliate design on the endpapers. All edges red-dyed.The feature of this "de-luxe" edition is some 50 contemporary photographs each mounted on card, mostly of historic scenes in Florence (Firenze). These are numbered and must be from the stock of a photographer working for the tourist market. A nice item.

pp222. A charcoal coloured stiff cover bearing "Notes on Nursing by Florence Nightingale" which lettering is fading. No lettering on spine (which is showing signs of wear). Interior is good. Last page has printed note: "A cheaper edition is also published at Two shillings". We would describe the colour of the endpapers as cream rather than white or yellow. This has been a family treasure and comes in an encyclopia looking box (worn on the spine and internally) approx 6" x 10". Brass clasp broken. On the cover is a printed label: "A Derry 17 Upper Bainbrigge St Derby". Also in the box are three family portraits and a three page letter from "The Schoolhouse Clermount Rockhampton Queensland", undated, but probably Victorian, written with a steel nib, describing life in Australia, perhaps to a potential emigrant. We offer the whole as we received it.
