No Dogs Policy (June 2019)

Following several unfortunate incidents and an ever-growing canine population in our corridors, we have decided, with some regret, that it is time to revert to the practice of only a few years ago of asking our customers not to bring dogs into the bookshop.

This policy change has been hard for our staff to
agree, but we think it is the right course of action.

Assistance Dogs are, of course, exempt.

Bookseller & Optician’s Work Together

Scarthin Books teamed up with Lancaster & Thorpe Optician in Matlock during the October half-term holidays, when they held a ‘Book Day’ – a full day of children’s appointments which gave them the opportunity to help promote reading (and the physical book!) to local youngsters.  A huge thanks to Sue Black and the team for what proved to be a very successful day, as these photos show…

New Book About Cromford Published

Cromford Revisited – a stunning new book by Doreen Buxton and Christopher Charlton – has just been published and is available later this week from Scarthin Books, priced £18 (post free if ordered online).

This richly illustrated book examines some aspects of the development of Cromford and Scarthin from the mid eighteenth century.  It recognises, as it must, a village largely shaped by several generations of the Arkwright family but introduces a wider cast of local characters; the mill-building George Evans of Bonsall and Cromford; the neighbouring gentry, the Gels of Hopton; the financier Peter Nightingale of Lea and several generations of the Wheatcroft family who spread the name of Cromford nationwide along the country’s network of canals.  Also featured is a later resident, Charles White, the concealed hand behind the Lea Mills strike of 1911-12 and a colourful local politician who was to become West Derbyshire’s Member of Parliament.

In the austere conditions of the 1920s and 30s, with the Arkwright family gone and a squire’s paternalistic hand no longer directing affairs, the village learned to manage for itself.  Then in 1971 when the Arkwright Festival was held to celebrate the bicentenary of Richard Arkwright’s arrival in Cromford, it found itself in the spotlight of heritage celebrity, recognition which in 2001 led to its achieving a central position in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

Book Signing – Marc Wildemeersch

Tuesday October 29th at 7pm

Marc Wildemeersch will discuss the life of Georges Kopp and sign copies of…

George Orwell’s Commander in Spain: The Enigma of Georges Kopp

(Thames River Press)

Belgian born Georges Kopp fought against Franco in Spain, used his engineering skills as a front when he went undercover in Nazi-occupied France, and finally escaped to Britain, where he became George Orwell’s brother-in-law.  Orwell may have used him as a template for O’Brien in Nineteen Eighty-Four.  That enigma was Georges Kopp.

£8.99 paperback (published 15/10/13)

The event starts at 7pm and there will be light refreshments available.

Apple Day 2013

Apple Day – Saturday 19th October, 1-5pm

Building on the successes of 2011 and 2012,
with something for everyone including (but not limited to) :
Apple-based games (for example: longest apple peel, apple bobbing)
Stalls, soup, hot chocolate,
Childrens art workshop
The Cromford Apple Pie competition
The Ripley Morris Men

The main focus of the day will be  the serious business of pressing the apples (eaters or cookers) that you bring along. You can drink the delicious results. Or alternatively, local hostelries will be offering traditional ciders whilst stalls will be offering soup, cake and other refreshments. Many of which will be apple based. Many of which will be locally sourced (and we don’t mean from the supermarket!)

We can also press pears, grapes and elderberries if you supply a pillow-case or similar bag to restrain the pulp. All pulp finds a good home on local allotment compost heaps.

This year promises a good harvest!
