No Dogs Policy (June 2019)

Following several unfortunate incidents and an ever-growing canine population in our corridors, we have decided, with some regret, that it is time to revert to the practice of only a few years ago of asking our customers not to bring dogs into the bookshop.

This policy change has been hard for our staff to
agree, but we think it is the right course of action.

Assistance Dogs are, of course, exempt.

Apple Day 2014

Help celebrate the fruitfulness of the Earth

Cromford Apple Day 2014 will be held on Saturday October 18th between 12pm and 5pm on Scarthin Promenade.

Bring your surplus apples (or pears, grapes or other fruit, which need a muslin bag or pillow-case) to be minced and pressed, together with a board and knives and time to quarter the fruit ready for efficient hand-powered processing.

There will also be trees and plants for sale, hot and cold refreshments, Morris Men, musical entertainment (including Wobble and Wheeze, a fiddle duo who played at this year’s Glastonbury festival) and children activities (craft, apple dunking of course and a few other apple related games).

For the last 3 years, we’ve also run a few competitions (best apple pudding and longest apple peel… with 450cm to beat! – record set by Graham Roberton last year). This year, we’re running even more competitions:

*The 3 Ps… best Pudding, best Pie, best Preserve (3 categories, prizes for winners and runners-up – must contain some apple… even if just a slice)

*The Heaviest Apple (grown locally… not at Morrison’s!)

*The Longest Apple Peel: come with your peeler or pen knife, with your apple or pick one of ours and try to beat Graham’s record!

Apple pressing generates quite a bit of pulp. If you have any pigs you would like feeding with the pulp, please let us know.

The pressing and entertainment are free but donations to Celebrating Cromford are welcome. For further information see www.celebratingcromford.org or contact Dave Mitchell: davescarthin@gmail.com or via 01629 823272 (Scarthin Books).

Cromford Village Late Night Opening

A Cracking Christmas in Cromford (?)

Thursday 20th December 5.30 – 8.00 p.m.

This year, Cromford businesses have decided to pull together and coordinate their pre-Christmas opening arrangements. Our village is a hub of enterprise, the meeting-place of eight through-roads, well-served by buses and with its own railway station. This has helped Cromford, centred around our attractive Market Place and Millpond, keep a range of shops, services and other businesses surprising for such a small community.

In previous years, shops such as Scarthin Books have made their own arrangements for special pre-Christmas opening. This year, to help kick-start a newly-founded traders’ association, over a dozen businesses are opening until at least 8 p.m. on the evening of Thursday 20th December. There will be special Cracking Christmas discounts, offers and gifts at most shops and a free snowman trail for children, who can collect clues from the different locations to solve a puzzle and win a prize while adults completing the trail will be offered a glass of mulled wine.

Participating businesses include:

Arkwright Stores

B Payne & Son Ltd – Christmas gifts, toiletries and personalised photo gifts

Boat Inn

Inspired Earth – Fairly traded handicrafts and clothing from India and Nepal

Lisa J Smith – Stained glass and jewellery

Malcolm D Smith – Seating, stools and chairs in ash

Market Place Restaurant

Netty the Making Elf in the Design and Make Bus

Q-Eye – Beads, Jewellery, Lighting

Scarthin Books – New, used, antiquarian books and a new range of gifts

Susanna Davis – Quality Linen and Silk

There will also be displays of artwork by local artists and a whole host of stalls selling everything from clothing to home-made cakes.
